Key Stage 3 Modern Foreign Languages

All students study either French or Spanish in key stage 3 according to their form group. There are 5 periods per fortnight in all years. Students develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in their target language and have regular access to ICT. Courses are multi-media and students have ample opportunities to use the language for practical communication as well as developing an understanding of grammatical concepts and the way in which the language works.

Year 7

French/ Spanish

Topics covered include personal identity, the classroom, family, pets and description, school, numbers, leisure, where you live and holidays.

The French programme of study is based on Metro 1 (Heinemann) and the Spanish programme of study is based on Listos 1 (Heinemann), both are supplemented by a wealth of commercially and staff produced resources.

Year 8

French

The French programme of study is based on Metro 2 (Heinemann). There is an increasing emphasis on grammatical understanding. Topics covered include daily routine, going out, the cinema, coping with illness, food, shopping, travel, Paris and holidays. Classes are set according to ability.

Spanish

The Spanish programme of study in based on Listos 1 and 2 (Heinemann). Students continue to develop their core skills in line with aptitude and ability. Many learners will be able to communicate in a range of tenses and give developed opinions on a range of topics by the end of the key stage. The course covers daily routine and the home, describing your town, sport and leisure, arranging to go out, descriptions and comparisons and describing personality.

Year 9

French

The French programme of study is based on Metro 3 (Heinemann). Students continue to develop their core skills in line with aptitude and ability. Many learners will be able to communicate in a range of tenses and give developed opinions on a range of topics by the end of the key stage. Topics covered include school, routine, coping with illness, directions, jobs, pocket money, food and healthy eating, shopping for clothes, holidays and accommodation.

Spanish

The Spanish programme of study is based on Listos 2 (Heinemann). Students continue to develop their practical skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. Many learners will be able to communicate in a range of tenses and give developed opinions on a range of topics by the end of the key stage. Topics covered include clothes, shopping, describing a town and tourism, the cinema, arranging to go out, the Hispanic world and coping with illness.
