Learning Support (SEND)
Brentside High School has an outstanding Learning Support Department which is welcoming and popular with both students and parents alike. The team offers help and support to those students who need some extra input, whether this be academic or mentoring.
Some of our provision is offered through withdrawal, like the Catch Up reading recovery programme or specialist literacy classes. We offer extra spelling groups, touch-typing and handwriting classes. Teaching Assistants support students with SEN in their classes - many of which have a favourable teacher-student ratio. We arrange access arrangements in examinations for the students who meet the criteria. On four nights a week, there are very popular homework clubs in our main room, with staff to support as well computers for students to work on.
At Key Stage 4 a broader mix of options is available to students. This may include a part-time vocational course (at an external college). Extra literacy, numeracy and general catch-up classes are also provided.
We also oversee the provision of some more specialist input to support the emotional wellbeing of students, over and above that offered by the school's own pastoral support staff. This includes a variety of counsellors and therapists.
The Special Educational Needs Coordinator: Mr P. Sandelson, is happy to discuss your child's needs and can be contacted on 0208 575 9162 ext 246.
