Mission

The library serves all school students and staff. Our aim is to assist in the development of our students as skilful independent learners and readers, adept in their use of information, with a passion for learning and reading. Resources are provided to support teaching and learning in an inclusive environment, addressing the diverse needs of the whole school community.

Access

The design of our library, constructed of wood and metal over two floors, is unique. We provide a spacious learning environment with a suite of thirty computers on the first floor and print resources on the ground floor. Over 10,000 print resources are available: information books, fiction, graphic fiction, textbooks, magazines, and newspapers.

The library is open from Monday to Friday during term time. Students are served by a professional librarian and library assistant. Sixth form students may access the library throughout the day and students in other year groups may use the library during their free time.

Our online catalogue, ‘Oliver’ enables students to search and reserve books and access recommended websites. Our ‘News’ page is regularly updated to support the school community with recommended reads, books lists, news of events etc. Audiobooks and eBooks are also available from our eBook library.

Reading for learning and pleasure

Evidence links reading for pleasure and educational attainment not only in English but in all subjects. There are social and health benefits to be gained too, from increased empathy to reduced stress. The library staff cooperate closely with the English Department to encourage students to read, read, read! All Year 7 students have regular English lessons in the library. Whole school activities such as Drop Everything and Read, the Ealing Teen Read and Excelsior Award also provide an opportunity for students to develop as readers and celebrate books.
